When choosing your outfits there really isn't one magic formula. Some things to keep in mind is what color your decor and walls are if you are planning on large prints for display. Will your portrait look good with your decor? What do YOU like? It isn't always as easy as staying away from Plaids or patterns, because in many circumstances those work in portraits. Usually you want to keep the tones similar... Pastels, lights, and neutrals if you want a brighter look, and bold, rich and dark colors for a more dramatic look.
